DIY Crafts for Kids – Colorful Paper Plate Fish Craft

Materials Needed

Paper Plates: White or light-colored plates are ideal for painting or coloring.
Paints/Colored Markers: Acrylic or watercolor paints work well. Markers are a mess-free alternative.
Paintbrushes: Needed if you’re using paints.
Scissors: For cutting the plate and decorations.
Glue: Regular school glue or a glue stick.

Steps

Step 1: Coloring the Plate
Spread out a protective layer (like newspaper) to prevent any messes. Color or paint one side of the paper plate. You can make a pattern, such as stripes, polka dots, or a gradient of colors. If you’re using paint, make sure it’s evenly spread and not too thick to prevent the plate from warping.

Step 2: Cutting the Plate
Fold the plate slightly to find the center, then cut a triangular wedge out for the fish’s mouth. This doesn’t have to be perfect; a rough triangle works fine. Next shape the tail. Use another paper plate or a piece of cardstock. Draw a tail shape and cut it out. The shape can be as simple as a triangle or more elaborate with curves.

Step 3: Creating Fins
Place the triangular wedge (the mouth piece) on top of the plate to form the dorsal fin. This should be glued to the opposite end of where the mouth would be. Create additional fins by cutting out shapes from leftover plate pieces. These can be attached to the sides of the fish for side fins.

Step 4: Adding Features
Attach the googly eye. This should be on the same side as the painted surface, opposite the mouth. Next, decorate your fish. Use glitter or sequins to add sparkle. You can make patterns, outline the fins, or create scales. If you’re using small beads or sequins, it might be easier to apply glue with a toothpick for precision.

Step 5: Final Touches
Allow everything to dry. Make sure all paint and glue are completely dry before handling. This might take a few hours. Once it’s dry, display your fish craft. You can hang it up by punching a hole near the top and threading a string through it. Alternatively, it can stand on a shelf as a decoration.

Additional Tips
Experiment with textures. You can use crumpled tissue paper, fabric scraps, or foam sheets for added texture. This craft is a great opportunity for kids to practice their cutting and painting skills. Let them make decisions about the colors and decorations.
